Boredom and my roommate

I am very bored. This cold weather has the best of me and my free time. I do not like to go out when it is cold,it is too much work. If you go to a party or bar it is nice and warm but, when you walk out it is freezing. I love the summer because I do not have to go through that nor, do I have to walk around with a jacket on my wrist. I have not seen my other 3 roommates in about two days. That is pretty weird considering that we live together. Although, one girl on the other side of the apartment, never comes out of her room so she does not count. She eats eggs a lot and refuses to take the trash out so she has her own bag of trash in her room. Sounds nasty, I know, but her room does not stink.

On another note, Basketball season is approaching. I played basketball throughout high school and I decided to not play in college. I wanted to enjoy my college life and I like to play basketball for fun now.

Switching up again, I am in a web page design class and I have noticed that most students are cheating on their assignments. The students are copying and pasting codes onto their web pages. This is an online course and this course used to be so difficult for me. I got a hang of it and I am doing a lot better because I spoke with the professor. The professor broke things down for me and helped me understand the codes for web page design. In the meantime, while I am struggling, my peers are just copying and pasting and getting 100% on their assignments. I was infuriated because I worked so hard to understand web page design, I almost dropped the class!

Birthday Girl and Community College

Today, September 29th, is my 21st birthday. I have been getting a lot of phone calls and text messages since last night. It is a good feeling, I must say, because that is all I wanted for my birthday, acknowledgment.

I went to the bar for my first time and my best friend bought me a drink. The bartender asked me what I wanted but I did not know. She simplified it for me and just yelled "sweet or sour!". I chose sweet, it was pretty good.

Today is Thursday and school was canceled due to the tornado. I do not have classes on Thursday but, I am glad there are no classes because now my roommate is home. I am usually home alone but now I can do homework with my roommate. She is not focused right now because she is watching Kick Ass on the ODU movie network. Her issue with studying is the television and I tell her all the time to just cut it off. She refuses to cut her television on because she says it helps her focus. Personally, I can have the television, radio and loud people talking and I can still focus. Loud noise actually helps me focus more than silence.
My new roommate makes me livid because she is very messy. I am glad I transferred to Old Dominion University as a sophomore because I did not have to share one bedroom with another person. I feel bad for freshmen because those dorms are so disgusting, I would not be able to live in those conditions. I am glad I went to Northern Virginia Community College because I was able to save a lot of money on most of my general requirements. Not only did I save money but I was also able to get a feel of the college life and professors. I think it’s a good idea that high school seniors go to community colleges after they graduate because they will be prepared for the university life and life away from their parents. I miss my parents dearly but I have to do what I have to do, this is my second year at Old Dominion and I love it.

Junior Year and Spain

This is my junior year at Old Dominion and I already have the "itis".  "Itis" means that you are ready to graduate and finish school.  Maybe I did not define that good enough but that is my definition.  I feel like the "itis" could be detrimental to the rest of my academic career.  I do not let the "itis" consume me but it is surely a serious factor for me right now.

I want to study abroad, especially in Spain.  I have an appointment tomorrow with an adviser on different options because I do not want to fall behind.  I am already behind because I transferred from a community college and changed my major, now I am playing catch up.  Although, this is a once in a lifetime chance that I must take advantage of.  I think my mother wants me to go more than I do!

I am considering Spain because my parents went in March.  They have talked my ear off on the beauty of Spain and I would just like to experience it as well.  My parents said that the fashion there is impeccable and it is on a seven days a week basis.  I told my mom she should buy me more clothes so I could fit in, but that was just an excuse to go shopping.  They wear a lot of over the knee boots and I just purchased a pair of black ones and I am anxiously waiting for their arrival!

I want to go home this weekend; I live in Stafford, Virginia.  My friend is willing to drive so it would not hurt if I car pooled with her.  I do not have any work to do because I have three exams on Friday and we have a project due on Friday.  I will be stress free and with my parents, what more could I ask for.

Dominican Republic

As a daughter of Dominican parents, I am consumed in the Dominican culture.  It was instilled in my head that I am Dominican-American and I must be proud.  I was raised in a predominately Caucasian neighborhood and I could have easily lost my identity as a Hispanic-American.

The last time I went to Dominican Republic was in 2006.  The trip was just for fun with my parents and my brother and cousin.  The Dominican lifestyle was so different from what I was used to for example, dinner was at four pm.  I was so used to dinner at six or seven pm that my mother had to cook for us again because we did not stuff ourselves at four.  The people would think about dinner at ten am and prepare it for hours.  Every morning a man would come around he neighborhood selling live chickens.  If you purchased one, it would be assumed that you know the excruciating process.  The chickens head must be twisted off, which lead to its death, feathers are removed and further cleansed in lemon juice to clean the chicken.  In America, I would have just gotten a Big Mac!

We went to one of Dominican Republics famous tourists sites, Punta Cana.  Punta Cana was paradise to me, the sand was nearly white and no sign of imperfection.  I was shocked when I was able to see my feet because the water was crystal clear!  My brother ,cousin and I, got on jet ski's that blew me away.  That was my first time and I was honestly scared for my life.

Our return home was a four hour trek but it was all worth it.  We took a back road for about one hour and I was scared for my life.  The back road was on a cliff with out any rails in case anything happened, one little mistake and we would have been history.

All in all, I would not trade my ethinicity for anything else.  I am Dominican American and aside from their ironic habits I am still proud! I had the bet summer in 2006.

A Night of Jersey Shore

For starters, my roommate is a reality show fanatic, I on the other hand, am not.  My roommate, Marcella, imploringly asked me to join her to watch a re-run of Jersey Shore.  Jersey Shore is an MTV reality show with eight people who enjoy themselves entirely too much.  I do not watch television that much and reality shows at that.  I may seem deprived from the reality/drama realm but personally, I can careless.  I feel as though reality shows are false and misleading for society and the upcoming future of America.

Most reality shows do not show any educational gain, they just show fighting and intense intoxication.  In America, the legal age to drink alcohol is 21.  A good amount of reality shows have the actors drinking and getting drunk and acting carelessly.  If a 16 year old were to watch these shows regularly , nine times out of ten, they will be greatly influenced.  Irresponsible drinking can lead to unprotected sex and even an accident if a designated driver is not available.

*side note* This show is still on and I've probably only watched about three minutes of this one hour spiel.

Its a Friday night and most of Old Dominion is finding a party to go to or a place to crash.  I am sitting here writing this blog. I am glad I know how to prioritize because any other person would leave this for the last minute, although it is Friday and this is due in a couple of hours.
